CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION ON TAMPERING AND VANDALISM
Please be advised that last week someone turned off a main line valve in the East Sevier County Utility District water distribution system which caused a major problem in its ability to provide continuous water service to some of its customers on English Mountain. This is the third unauthorized tampering of an ESCUD main line valve in its water system within the last year by a person whose sole purpose has been the disruption of the distribution of water to ESCUD customers. Tampering with or vandalizing water utility property is a criminal offense under Tennessee law, T.C.A. § 39-14-411. When the actual damages exceed $1,000, the offense is at least a Class C felony punishable by imprisonment from 3-15 years and a fine up to $10,000. Tampering with or vandalizing a public water system is a federal criminal offense under 42 U.S.C. § 300i-1 punishable by imprisonment for not more than 20 years and a fine up to $250,000. When a person tampers with or vandalizes a public water system with the intent to harm or intimidate the public, such actions constitute domestic terrorism under federal law.
Please report any suspicious activity you may observe to the ESCUD office immediately.
